Creations & Characters: Wolfkin Trait Preview
As you might imagine with a blog name like Wizard & Wolf, I'm a pretty big fan of wolves in general. So imagine my disappointment when I realize there isn't really a nice wolf-like race for me to play as or use in my D&D games... so I decided to make one.
I spent some time work-shopping a name for the race, but in the end I realized I had known it all along. It was staring me right in the face in my own username.
The Wolfkin.
I'm still early in the process, working through the finalized traits and lore behind this race, but I wanted to take a minute to share my rough draft of the traits I have planned. The following traits will be common to all Wolfkin, but there will also be three sub-races that will add a little more flavor (more on those in a future post).
Ability Score Increase
Your Wisdom score increases by 2.
Age
Wolfkin have lifespans similar to those of humans. They are considered adults at age 20 and live an average of 80 years, though some have lived as long as 120 years.
Alignment
Wolfkin tend to be Chaotic within the context of the larger world, valuing their freedom and their nomadic way of life. However, they are dutifully Lawful within the structure of their pack. Due to being somewhat disconnected from the conflicts of others, Wolfkin tend toward neutrality.
Size
Wolfkin are taller than humans, averaging over 6 feet tall though many of them walk with a slight hunch. Your size is Medium.
Speed
Your base walking speed is 30 feet.
Bite
Your fanged maw is a natural weapon, which you can use to make unarmed strikes. If you hit with it, you deal piercing damage equal to 1d6 + your Strength modifier, instead of the bludgeoning damage normal for an unarmed strike.
Darkvision
Accustomed to twilit forests and the night sky, you have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.
Keen Nose
You have a heightened sense of smell. You have advantage on perception checks involving smell. You also have advantage on Survival checks when attempting to track a creature whose scent you have.
Natural Predator
You have proficiency in the Stealth skill.
Wolf Kinship
You have the ability to converse with wolves as though you had cast Speak With Animals.
Languages
You can speak, read, and write Common, Wolfspeak, and one language of your choice. Wolfspeak is the language used within the Wolfkin pack and consists of a combination of subtle growls and sign language. It is often confused as a very primitive language by other races, but in actuality rivals elvish in its complexity and structure.
