Creations & Characters: Lute of Standing Ovation
For the first edition of Creations & Characters (a series where I share some of my homebrew and highlight characters I've made) I wanted to share one of my first magical items. This is a relatively simple item, whose purpose is more flavor than mechanical.
The Lute of Standing Ovation was created very early on in one of my campaigns as a reward for a player who was playing Bard. The idea was simply to highlight his standing as a very proficient lute player and allow him to more often succeed at gaining some extra spending money during a night at the inn.
The magic item text is as follows:
This lute is expertly crafted and always perfectly tuned. You have advantage on performance checks while playing this instrument.
If you have proficiency with a given musical instrument, you can add your proficiency bonus to any ability checks you make to play music with the instrument. A bard can use a musical instrument as a spellcasting focus.
As I said, from a mechanical standpoint it doesn't offer anything in regards to character power, but it does have a little RP flair to help Bards stand apart from the competition. This magic item does not require attunement.
If you wished to expand on the theme, while giving this item a more mechanical purpose, a charm effect could be added in the following way:
Humanoids who hear you playing are entranced by the beauty of your song. Any humanoid that can hear the song must make a Wisdom saving throw against your spellcasting DC (they do so with advantage if you or your companions are fighting it). If it fails the saving throw, it is charmed by you until you stop playing or until you or your companions do anything harmful to it. You must use your action every round to continue playing the lute. The charmed creature stands to their feet if they are able and claps enthusiastically for the duration of the song.
If this charm effect were to be added, I would suggest increasing the rarity of the item from uncommon to very rare and requiring attunement.
Till next we roll,
