Creations & Characters: Rhonin Helltide

For this entry of Creations & Characters I wanted to do a spotlight on one of my newest characters. This one was made to be Adventurers League legal utilizing only the Player's Handbook and Xanathar's Guide to Everything.

For a peak at the mechanical bits of this character, you can view him on D&D Beyond here. He is currently level 1 but will eventually take the Swashbuckler subclass. Below you will find a bio, including his backstory told in his own words.

Rhonin Helltide
Race: Variant Human - Male
Class: Rogue
Background: Pirate

The name's Rhonin Helltide, most feared and respected pirate on all the seas... OK, so maybe not THE most, but I'm definitely up there.

You don't make it to my age in this line of work unless you're extremely good, or total shit, and I can ensure you I'm definitely not shit. I've spent my life on the high seas, sailing from port to port taking what I want and doing what I fancy. I managed to make quite the reputation for myself as a pirate of some repute.

Eventually, I got myself noticed by one Captain Ashton Gale of "The Storm Seeker", or "Ol' Crabby" as his crew would call him. He took me on as one of his Boatswain, but shortly thereafter he realized his blunder and promoted me to Quartermaster after the previous one threw himself overboard one night.

I spent the next several years enjoying the good life on the high seas... but this life can be a cruel mistress and as fate would have it, the Storm Seeker was about to find her tempest.

We docked in a relatively small port town one night to gather some... provisions. It was a typical job. Get in, have a drink, grab the shit, then get out. What Ol' Crabby failed to notice though was that posted a few miles up the coast was a nasty little surprise in the form of the local navy. Ol' Crabby was a fearsome pirate, but he wasn't the sharpest cutlass on deck.

Needless to say, out visit attracted their attention and they followed, nay hunted, us out into the open waters and lit up the Storm Seeker like a fireball in the Underdark. When the onslaught subsided, I was left stranded and adrift at sea. Hard to say how long I floated there, at least a week by my best guess, nothing to eat but the provision I had on me and the flotsam.

Eventually I was picked up by a crew of Orcish slavers who took me ashore and tried to sell me off... they must not have heard of me before, poor bastards. Rhonin Helltide is a free man, nobody owns him. I picked the locks in my shackles one night, slit the captain's throat, and stole away under the cover of darkness.

After that, I figured my best chance was to lay low for a while, let the tide settle as it were. I headed further inland, putting a little distance between me and the sea. It still feels weird though, not being on the water. I have trouble sleeping without the rocking of the waves or the smell of the salt. Land has never been a place I've much cared for.

Mark my words, Rhonin Helltide will sail again. I just need to make enough gold to buy my own ship, find myself a crew, and get back out on the blue. Until then, I'll have to make the most of what this land has to offer.

Anyway, that's my tale. How about another round, mate? Drink up, me hearties, it's going to be a fun night.

Yo ho.
